Connecting the Dots Between Immigrant and LGBT Rights (on 6/29)
Because many of us know what it feels like to:
• Live under laws that say we are less human
• Be a scapegoat for society’s problems
• Be afraid for the security of our families
• Feel vulnerable and unsafe because of policies, institutions and attitudes that keep us on the margins
Aubrey Harrison and Homero Luna, co-facilitated “Are Immigrants the New Gay?” on June 29. This training helped to draw connections between the issues that immigrants and the LGBT communities face today. More than just a training; this was an opportunity for BRO to open the dialogue between these two communities in order to build a coalition in the fight for equality. By working closely with organizations like PCUN and CAUSA – two organizations that work for immigrant rights — BRO is helping to redefine the movement itself.
At the training, BRO also learned of a documentary currently in the works titled “Papers”. It is a narrative concerning the decisions undocumented teens in Oregon, have to make once graduating high school and turning 18. For more information on this film, check out Graham Street Productions.
If you missed this opportunity, keep your eyes peeled for more trainings from BRO!
