On The Bilerico Project blog, Bil Browning posted a letter from a reader asking to respond to the fact that homophobic author Orson Scott Card is working for Audible.com. Audible is the internet’s largest supplier of audio books. The entry brings to light an interesting point concerning free speech and the venues they are appropriate in.

The reader clearly asks that Audible sever its ties with Card, and that Bilerico take part in getting the word out, while Browning outlines the fact that free speech is free speech. Card is not spewing hate on Audible’s website and his religious beliefs shouldn’t keep him from “earning a buck”.

These thoughts shed light the climate those of us on the pro-equality side are at risk of imposing on others. When you spend decades being oppressed and pushed aside it’s hard, at times, to bite your tongue. In favor of building an inclusive and effective movement it is important that we be aware of when to “live and let live” and when to call for action.
