BRO Statement on Connecticut marriage equality ruling

Statement from Jeana Frazzini, Executive Director of Basic Rights Oregon

“Basic Rights Oregon has just learned that the Connecticut State Supreme Court this morning overturned a law excluding gay and lesbian couples from the right to marry as unconstitutional.

“Today’s decision in Connecticut is a victory for all Americans who cherish fairness and opportunity. While the ruling has no legal impact on Oregonians, we are encouraged by the societal change this represents – this country is moving in the direction of recognizing that every committed couple in a trusting and loving relationship deserves dignity and equal treatment under the law.

“Courts play a critical role in our democracy, and Connecticut’s Supreme Court did its job today by ensuring that all of that state’s citizens are treated fairly and equally under the law. Basic Rights Oregon continues to work for a day when all Oregonians are treated just the same under Oregon law.”
