SECOND ANTI-EQUALITY EFFORT FAILS!

Share |

How sweet it is.

Anti-equality groups have now failed to qualify either of their two referenda.

As of January 1, Oregon’s new anti-discrimination and domestic partnerships laws will go into effect.

And as of January 1, Oregon will be a better place to live, work and raise a family.

Both of these laws were passed by our legislature and signed by Governor Kulongoski earlier this year. They represent historic achievements in the movement for equality for all Oregonians.

Let’s savor this victory for a moment.

I am very excited today!! I’m spreading the word all
across the net. I was at work and stopped, jumped up
and down, and loudly announced the great news.
I just wanted to add that “anti-equality” groups
    failed, (anti-gay was one side
of many scary faces in the work to stall these
bills, including anti-trans among others) ^_~

Also.. I’m having a bit of difficulty with the page
    wrapping in this comment box.

Update from BRO: we fixed the title of the post. Thanks for catching that! -Ed.

Congratulations for all the hard work! If you’re in the Corvallis area on THURSDAY, OCTOBER 25, at
6:30 pm, join us at Westminster House, 101 N.W. 23rd, for “good tunes, free pizza, and a great community conversation with Basic Rights Oregon. Come celebrate our victory–and find out how to defend our newly gained protections.

  3. Wayne Schmidt Says:

It’s been a long slog, and this isn’t where we want to be ultimately but it’s a HUGE win
and restores my faith in the vast majority of Oregonians understanding how unfair
the opponents’ position was. From this solid win let’s continue to build our state
into a place we can all live in equality.

wow…huge day! I have been with many fighting for our rights since 1985…
what was it “Yes on 8″ campaign here in Oregon! Many of our brother and sisters have fought
for our rights for equality! Some died so we could live…

This year’s BRO Annual Dinner will be an extra special celebration for us!

Cheers…here’s to all who over the many years helped this day
    finally arrive!

  5. Heather Says:

Great way to begin the weekend! Thanks, Oregon.

  6. Marlin Says:

Does anyone know how the DP bill will be implemented?
Registration by county? Is there going to be events for Jan 2nd?
Is there some place that has this information?

  7. Tony Says:

    How sweet it is!!!

Lets all celebrate this victory and prepare ourselves to defend these rights that we have fought so long and hard to attain. There is more to come — those who oppose giving us equal rights will not easily go into the night.

    Thanks BRO.

I live in Calif. but I wanted to
    congratulate all Oregonians on their
BIG win today. Discrimination based on
    sexual orientation should be illegal
and now Ore. will join Calif.,
Colo., Conn., Hawaii, Ill., Iowa, Maine,
    Mass., Minn., Nev., N.H., N.J., N.M.,
    N.Y., R.I., Vt. & Wisc. w/ similar
    laws already in place.

    AND WASH. STATE TOO.

  10. Scott Schmidt Says:

    OOPS, AND MD. TOO!

  11. Mark Says:

To add to Scott Schmidt’s post @ 8…

Don’t forget us here in Washington state…discrimination based on sexual
orientation is illegal here too. A repeal siganture effort was tried but
came up short too. The sky remains in place above us and all is well.

  12. Rick Gano Says:

Congratulations, BRO! As the father of a gay son, I
am proud that Oregon will now join other progressive
states in providing equality for everyone. Keep up
the fight; however, unfortunately there are still
some with a mean spirited mind set.

  13. Mikayla Marie Says:

As a TS just starting her transition into womanhood,
this is fantastic news. I live in Vancouver,WA and
work in Portland. I have been dealing with coming
out at work as a TS and now i have the courage to
take that big step and start the new year off in
great spirits. Just want to thanks BRO for helping
transwomen like me as well as my gay/lesbian
bros/sisters to have a safer and more tolerant place
    to work and live.

    Thanks BRO..

    Mikayla Marie

  14. Ken Corbin Says:

This is a great day for all Oregonians.

But we should not forget that, that the two laws that we now celebrate were the result of an open deal with “anti-equality” forces. In return for specific religions exemptions in the new laws, they promised not to actively oppose them. That the opposition initiative campaign was unable to collect the absurdly low number of signatures needed to refer legislation to the voters is due largely to the legislatures wisdom in making this deal, and the integrity of mainline opposition forces in honoring it.

  15. Mad Professah Says:

    Congratulations, Oregon!
Welcome to the rest of the progressive “Left Coast”!

  16. Hilary Taylor Says:

Great It’s about time!!! we are jumping up and down
    here in Hillsboro!!!
