SUMMARY:Join us for a rally in support of the freedom to marry!
DESCRIPTION:Join us in Portland for a rally outside of the Mark O. Hatfield Federal Courthouse at 5 pm on March 26th. In just a few short weeks\, the U.S. Supreme Court will decide two cases about the freedom to marry. These two cases – which concern the discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and California’s Proposition 8 – are fundamentally about whether gay and lesbian Americans can enjoy the same freedoms and opportunities as everyone else. Momentum is on our side - a bipartisan majority of Americans recognize that the ability to marry the person you love is a Constitutional right. But now is the time to stand up and show your support for marriage equality. This is a historic moment in the equality movement\, and we hope you can participate in an event to show your support. Let's give people hope and create lasting change by using the voice of the people! RSVP HERE!

In the post funeral days of Jesse’s death\, Sam returns to finish a script which holds the chemistry and alchemy of their life together. From behind the typewriter\, Sam embarks on a dizzying journey where the lines between what’s real and the world of the theatre begin to merge--an enchanted place where he is able to relive his bond with Jesse. Layers upon layers of fiction bury the two men in a cloud of poignant memories cut with honest truth. With the miraculous visitation of his dead cat\, Noodles\, Sam gets one last chance to face the truth of his grief and to move beyond his sorrow-induced seductive dream-world. What does the face of death look like? A theatrical kaleidoscope\, Anything But Brilliant uses song\, poetry and experimental staging to tell the story of love between two men in life\, in death and in letting go. SUMMARY:Turning the Tide for Marriage Equality
DESCRIPTION:Join us for "Turning the Tide for Marriage Equality!" Momentum is building fast for marriage equality and it’s time to get involved! This spring\, for the first time in history\, a sitting president endorsed the freedom to marry for gay and lesbian couples. Here in Oregon\, Basic Rights Oregon’s education campaign has led to a double-digit increase in support for marriage equality in the past 3 years. And this November\, Washington voters will go to the polls to decide whether to uphold marriage equality legislation passed by the Washington Legislature earlier this year. Click here to RSVP for this special presentation about the exciting work Basic Rights Oregon is doing to move the conversation forward on why marriage matters to LGBT families! Thank you for playing your part to ensuring that marriage equality can be secured in the place we call home – the Pacific Northwest! See you all on September 7th!

SUMMARY:Question One – Same-Sex Marriage Documentary & Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Basic Rights Oregon is proud to be a community partner and to facilitate a panel discussion following the film! Directors Joe Fox & James Nubile and subject Darlene Huntress will be in attendance for the film! Event info: Question One Saturday\, May 19th 6pm Kennedy School Theater (5736 NE 33rd Avenue) Tickets: Film-only $9 general\, $7 senior/student Buy your tickets here: More on the film from Q Doc: On May 6th\, 2009\, Maine became the first state in this country to legislatively grant same-sex couples the right to marry. Seven months later\, on November 3rd\, 2009 Maine\, thru a referendum election\, reversed\, becoming the thirty first state in this country to say “no” to gay and lesbian marriage. “Question One”\, a new documentary by award winning filmmakers Joe Fox and James Nubile\, chronicles the fierce and emotional battle that took place in Maine during that time. Closely mirroring California’s Prop 8 battle\, the film chronicles in “War Room” fashion the behind the scenes workings on BOTH sides of the campaign (the first time this has ever been done). The filmmakers spent the duration of the campaign imbedded in the war rooms and strategy sessions as they captured the private thoughts\, insights\, fears and conflicts expressed by key leaders as they crafted and created their messages and strategies. With the state of Washington facing its own voter referendum this year\, and the equality movement in Oregon carefully strategizing its next move\, Question One provides an insightful and timely examination of the inner workings and cross-continental tactics that are being employed in marriage equality battles across the country. Panel discussion facilitates by Basic Rights Oregon following the film. Question One: Directors Joe Fox & James Nubile 2011 USA 113 mins. SUMMARY:Q Doc Opening Night Film – Chely Wright: Wish Me Away
DESCRIPTION:Basic Rights Oregon is a proud sponsor of Chely Wright: Wish Me Away – opening film at this year’s Q Doc Film Festival. Chely Wright will be in attendance for the film night! Event info: Wish Me Away Thurs\, May 17th 7 pm Kennedy School Theater (5736 NE 33rd Avenue) Tickets: Film-only $9 general\, $7 senior/student\, Film & Party $25 Buy your tickets here: More info on the film from Q Doc: As The Dixie Chicks learned all too well\, the world of country music isn’t the most inviting place for anyone who deviates from the narrow Nashville norms. In 2010\, singer Chely Wright put this conservative environment to the test when she became the first major country music performer to publicly come out as lesbian. Having made a strong debut as the Academy of Country Music’s Top New Female Vocalist in 1995\, Wright went on to score big hits with “Shut Up and Drive” and “Single White Female.” She was romantically linked with superstar Brad Paisley and was invited to perform at “The Mother Church of Country Music\,” the Grand Ole Opry. Behind the scenes\, though\, Wright was struggling with her sexuality and her Christian faith\, and she was haunted by a difficult childhood in rural Kansas. After attempting suicide\, she decided to risk her career by releasing Like Me\, a memoir about her years in the closet. Named after a track from Wright’s album “Lifted Off the Ground\,” Wish Me Away is a candid profile of a groundbreaking figure in music history. Wish Me Away: Directors Bobbie Birleffi and Beverly Kopf 2011 USA 96 min. SUMMARY:‘Standing On Ceremony: The Gay Marriage Plays’
DESCRIPTION: Artists Rep offers a special run of ‘Standing On Ceremony – The Gay Marriage Plays’ Nine\, 10-minute plays by renowned playwrights In partnership with Basic Rights Oregon Artists Rep will add a short run of Standing On Ceremony to their 11/12 Season with eight performances of plays written by some of America’s most illustrious playwrights. This run is a follow up to a one-night event last November where over 30 theatre companies internationally presented the plays in solidarity to increase public awareness about marriage equality. Enthusiastic audiences from that event encouraged Artists Rep to bring the show back. Performances will be offered April 6 through April 21. Standing On Ceremony consists of nine\, 10-minute plays written by a variety of very well-known playwrights on topics and issues surrounding gay marriage\, performed in a staged-reading format by local performers. The playwrights whose short plays are featured in the Standing On Ceremony anthology are Obie and Ace Award winner Mo Gaffney\, Heideman Award winner Jordan Harrison\, Pulitzer Prize winner and Tony Award nominee Moisés Kaufman\, Tony Award nominee Neil LaBute\, Sundance Jury Prize winner Wendy McLeod\, Obie Award winner José Rivera\, Obie and Outer Critics Circle Award winner Paul Rudnick\, and Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winner Doug Wright. To produce these plays rights-holders require that a portion of the proceeds be donated to a local organization working toward marriage equality and request that a wedding cake be served after each show. Artists Rep’s Standing On Ceremony will be directed by Jon Kretzu and Stephanie Mulligan. Casting is underway. Artists Rep has partnered with Basic Rights Oregon\, who will share the proceeds of this production. “This compelling collection of plays is a powerful way to open up the conversation on why marriage matters\,” said Juan Martinez\, Development Director at Basic Rights Oregon who attended the benefit performance in November. “Basic Rights Oregon is proud to be working with Artists Rep to shine the light on this issue through this presentation that will undoubtedly change hearts and minds.” More information specifically about Standing on Ceremony can be found here: http://www.artistsrep.org/onstage/2011--2012-season/standing-on-ceremony.aspx “Standing On Ceremony – The Gay Marriage Plays” Written by: Mo Gaffney\, Jordan Harrison\, Jeffrey Hatcher\, Moisés Kaufman\, Neil LaBute\, Wendy McLeod\, José Rivera\, Paul Rudnick\, Doug Wright.
