Trans Justice Summit is a Huge Success

On Saturday we made history.  Basic Rights Oregon, together with our numerous community partner organizations and many community members and volunteers, held a wildly successful Trans Justice Health Care Summit at Portland’s Q Center. 140 people turned out for this first-of-its-kind event.

BRO Executive Director Jeana Frazzini and Portland City Commissioner Amanda Fritz gave the opening remarks.  Afterwards, dozens of spectacular presenters led seven fantastic workshops.  The topics covered included racial justice, advocating employers for inclusive health care, the Basic Rights Oregon “Know Your Rights Guide”, self-advocacy with health care providers, lobbying legislators and other decision makers, health care access for trans youth, and a training on how to be a great trans ally.

Attendees packed the Q Center for a keynote speech by Lori Buckwalter.  Lori’s story about her personal journey and the fight for trans rights fifteen years ago highlighted how far trans justice has come, and how much farther we have to go. As Summit Host Committee and Trans Justice Working Group member Emily Asmann said, “If you need an assurance that we will one day win this fight, you need only look at how far we’ve come.”

This momentous event was successful because of your participation and support as well as the work of the Summit Host Committee, Trans Justice Working Group, and the wonderful volunteers who helped run the show.
