Our Work

In 2010 Basic Rights Oregon launched the Standing Together Program to centralize leadership of color around justice and equality. Out of our work with local and national movement leaders to coordinate a year-long series of skills, campaign, and analysis trainings alongside in-depth strategy sessions we built Our Families.  Our Families is a community-based education project that raises the visibility, experiences and public support of LGBT families of color within predominately straight communities of color.

Why We Do This Work

Our communities are strongest when all our families are honored and respected.  Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people are part of the fabric of communities of color and are members of our own families.   We believe that all families, in all our diversity are what make our community strong and that all families deserve equal access to healthcare, employment, education, family protections and more.

Who We Are

Our Families is led by Standing Together – a people of color leadership team, who come from LGBT, and straight allies within communities of color.  By stepping forward,  launching this education campaign and building relationships in the community, we know that we can build the power of our communities to thrive. 

How We Do This Work

Our Families seeks to raise the visibility of LGBT families of color and to support the leadership of LGBT people of color. We believe our communities are strongest when all our families are honored and respected, so that we can thrive together. 

Our Families works on three strategies to strengthen our communities:

1. Working with influential leaders in communities of color to take public stands in support of LGBT families of color.
2.  Supporting  community groups and organizations of color in recognizing and addressing the needs and experiences of LGBT families of color.
3.  Building relationships and leadership among LGBT people of color.
