Last month the American Bar Association published a comprehensive new legal primer for transgender adults, a first of it’s kind: “Transgender Persons and the Law”, written by Ally Windsor Howell. Howell, a lawyer who identifies as a trans woman, has written this book in such a way as to make it accessible to trans people in general but also be detailed enough to provide lawyers with critical information regarding representing transgender people.
The book is an effective snapshot of American transgender rights up to 2013, including a wide variety of national and state policies effecting transgender people. As a companion guide, the book comes with a DVD containing identity changing documents for all 50 states and the District of Colombia, including information regarding immigration and naturalization papers.
The treatise, priced at $129.95, is available on ABA’s website. Those seeking information on transgender rights may also consult Lambda Legal’s free online resource, “Know Your Rights” or Basic Right’s Oregon’s local free “Know Your Rights” guide here.
