In October 2011 we launched three incredibly powerful videos as a part of the Our Families campaign. These videos highlighted the experiences, trials, and triumphs of African American, Latino, and Asian and Pacific Islander LGBT people in our communities. To date these videos have had over 18,000 views on youtube, received national recognition and have been screened in communities all over the state of Oregon.
Video Screenings have featured some or all three of the videos created and have included audiences ranging from straight folks newly being introduced to these issues, , to LGBT people of color and white, to straight allies, and everything in between.
“I’m really excited! This campaign has been incredible and it only gets bigger and better from here,” Jeana Frazzini, Executive Director of Basic Rights Oregon
There have been screenings in specific communities including the CAUSA Leaders Assembly, PFLAG Portland Black Chapter Anniversary Celebration, and the Asian Celebration; screenings among organizations and leaders, like Latino Network and The Leaders of Color Executive Director’s Circle, committed to deepening their work around Racial Justice.
James Sims commented on attending the PFLAG Portland Black Chapter screening. “I’ve seen this video before and it never impacted me the way it did at the PFLAG gathering. I’m learning that friends can be family too and I get to choose my friends.”
As the dialogue continues we begin to shift the discourse in our communities around LGBT people of color and our unique experiences. For more information about Our Families and/or hosting a screening please contact us.
