Today, the Trump administration announced it would be creating a “Division of Conscience and Religious Freedom” at the Department of Health and Human Services. This new office will defend doctors, nurses, and other healthcare workers who discriminate against patients based on their reproductive history and gender identity.
Health care discrimination is already a huge problem for the LGBTQ community: according to a recent survey by the Center for American Progress, 29 percent of transgender people have experienced a provider refusing to serve them because of their gender identity in the past year.
As a result, nearly 1 in 4 transgender people reported avoiding or postponing medical care due to fear of discrimination. And in many cases, an alternative medical provider simply isn’t available – particularly in rural areas.
Make no mistake: this shameful decision isn’t about freedom of speech. Doctors will now be allowed to deny care to transgender patients, people who have had abortions or use certain forms of birth control, people in same-sex relationships, and even the children of same-sex parents.
These aren’t hypothetical examples – each and every one of these situations has already happened in the US. And with the administration’s new rules, the problem is only going to get worse. Lives are already on the line.
We can’t allow this to happen. Will you join us and sign our petition to let Donald Trump and his administration know that healthcare workers should be required to serve everyone equally — regardless of medical history, religion, sexual orientation, or gender identity?
As always, we couldn’t do this work without your support. You can help us continue to defend LGBTQ equality throughout Oregon and beyond by making a donation today.
