Before contacting us for legal help, please read this.

If you are reaching out seeking legal support, it is important to note that we do not have any legal professionals on staff. If capacity allows, we support community members who send an individual request by providing recommendations and informed referrals to legal professionals who could possibly be a good fit. For issues impacting a group of individuals in our state, we work in partnership with the ACLU of Oregon and other legal advocacy organizations dedicated to impact litigation.

BRO receives outreach from individuals statewide about challenges they face, and we try to track patterns to identify opportunities for policy change. We get involved in those situations on a case-by-case basis as a means to solve larger community problems through policy changes. We are often unable to provide case management or long-term advocacy support for a single individual. BRO does not have staff or cooperating attorneys available to engage directly in individual litigation. The Oregon Law Center, ACLU, Disabilities Rights Oregon, OGALLA, OJRC, university legal clinics, and many other organizations have staff and cooperating attorneys that may, on a case-by-case basis, engage in direct legal work.

Our goal is to resolve LGBTQ2SIA+ discrimination or disparate treatment issues based on identity. In some cases when we provide recommendations or direct support, those issues may still not be resolved with the outcome that the person was hoping for. Because we don’t have staff attorneys, that is the point at which an individual would need to seek direct attorney support to solve any outstanding problems that pertain to only their individual situation.

We understand the deep frustration and pain that discrimination causes, and the disappointment that comes with the lack of a satisfying resolution. But BRO’s organizational purpose and function is to achieve high-level policy victories, and we do not have the staffing, resources or capacity to act as personal legal counsel.
